Simple Understanding of the Eight Auspicious Tibetan Symbols in Buddhism - by Rizwana Mundewadi

Simple understanding of the Eight Auspicious Tibetan Symbols in Buddhism

The tantrik culture and Buddhism is prevalent in Tibet and China. Since ancient times the monks used to write scriptures on flags and tie it above the mountains or huts. They believed that the wind when blowing would take these symbols to many other places of the world and bring about peace and enlightenment everywhere. The five elements theory of balancing all the five elements when living, that is fire, wood, earth , water and metal , what we know today as the principles in feng shui existed even before we came to know about this. The basic principle behind this is living in harmony  with nature. peaceful existence with nature not harmign any element in way for progress.
There are eight auspicious symbols of Tibetan Buddhism which were traditionally offered to teachers to transmit them to students and in healing rituals. Each symbol represents one of Buddha's teachings and when used all together their power is multiplied many folds. With these symbols appearing in most of my healing paintings along with Reiki symbols and Chinese Calligraphy I would like to give an simple explaination of these eight auspicious symbols.
1) Parasol- The Umbrella, symbolises royalty and spiritual power, protection from negative energies.
2) Gold Fishes, represent fertility and good fortune. Two fishes help to swim through the ocean of life problems smoothly.
3) Treasure Vase, a vase of inexhaustible treasures, spiritual and material abundance,   satisfaction from all material desires.
4) Lotus, denotes mental and spiritual purity and peace. The growing of lotus in muddied water symbolises the mind and soul growing from disturbances towards enlightenment.
5)  Conch Shell represents the call for Buddha teachings, the symbol of enlightenment.
6) Endless knot having twined knots that are inter linked together also termed as  mystic knot as the beginning and end of the knot is not visible.
7) Victory Banner depicts victory of truth, peace and harmony over evil forces. Used to bring about victory in career, wealth and health and in fact all areas of life.
8) Wheel, representing the never ending cycle of life learning, its movement in circular direction, never ending indicates spiritual growth and learning of Buddha principles and bringing about spiritual change.
The eight lucky symbols often termed as Ashtamangala are the most powerful symbols used to bring about harmony, luck peace and enlightenment. The qualities of Buddha are represented by these eight auspicious symbols.
In some places the eight auspicious symbols are also depicted as symbol bearing Goddesses holding each symbol termed as Tashi-Lhamo Gyal in Tibet an culture, The Ashtamangala Devi in sanskrit. Each Goddess is seen holding a symbol and is decked with jewels and ornaments.

My latest painting has a form of green figure, is I think the Green Tara a Goddess in female form which I will write about later on. Paintings come first and later on the explainations...

Paintings and Catharsis

Catharsis is a ffeling of clearing or letting go, cleansing of all negative energies. we sometimes feel all pent up emotions and blocked mind. There is no focus and the individual feels confused. If this goes on for a long time then the positive energy is drained and the individual feels sick and less productive.
Paintings have been observed to have emotional effects on the individuals mind. Very often when we see a happy child smiling or a beautiful flower our mind relaxes and this positivity is transferred to us. Our hormones relax and this eases the mind of emotional stress. It will not laways be possible to find images around when you need it. Hence symbolic painintgs and happy paintings help in catharsis. The symbols have an positive effect ont he viewer and every glance helps to ease down stress.
Keeping some time for yourself helps to assess yourself and also makes you understand life better. How does this process of catharsis work? When you are emotionally upset the aura becomes weak and we tend to be irritable and have emotional outbursts of anger. This leads to catharsis and we feel relaxed. But today it is not practical to open up iun fornt of others as you may lose your family and friends and eve your boss may fire you. Hence as a precautionary measue a happy symbolic painting when viewd will emit positive energy that will help the individual to face the world positively. Each time it is viewed the same healing process will take place. A happy paintign some how transfers the viewer into a different domain and for the time being away from reality and they come back refrershed.

Hanging positive paintings and symbolic paintings will help you to get colour therapy and seeing such artworks in the mornign helps to keep the mind positive. Feng Shui and Paintings on War

Art is becoming a name in every household. Many of us are attracted to paintings of scenery and beautiful flowers. Some of us also like paintings that depict war or sad scenes and even sometimes a dried tree! each paintings connects with the viewer according to their individual experiences.
Many a times Feng shui consultants have noticed in many cases that one of the reason for fights and misunderstandings in the home lead to the paintings displaye din the house. Husband-wife or mother-in-law daughter-in-law bickerings are there every house but sometimes it may be the effect of negative emotions depicte din the paintings displayed on their walls.
Paintings of Mahabharata and Ramayana which have religious sanctity among the Hindus but still they depict war and misunderstandings. Paintings of war, drought, famine, destruction, floods, ruins, haunted mansions must be thoroughly avoided. Many of us are even attracted to paintings of raging bulls and elephants. These effect the emotions of the inmates negatively and they are always ready to fight.
It is advisable to select paintings that depict positive feelings and have bright or fresh colours. One can go in for beautiful sunrise landscapes, flower paintings, portraits of famous people and even symbolic paintings that depict hope and prosperity.
